What is a "meta description?"

This article explains what a meta description is and why it's so important for SEO.

Google has a good explanation on what a meta description is:

"A meta description tag generally informs and interests users with a short, relevant summary of what a particular page is about. They are like a pitch that convince the user that the page is exactly what they're looking for."

It's important to note that Google will only *sometimes* use your meta description. 

In HTML a meta description goes into the head tag and looks like this:
