How I built my career in tech from 1989 to 2018 - 1989
This is the story of how I built my career from 1989 to around 2018. It has my successes and my failures. This post is updated from time to time to as I add new information that might be relevant.
In school I already liked computers a lot. Computers provided me with an intellectual escape providing an avenue for my mind to go and explore and learn. In school one is a sponge, and taking in knowledge about how computers and programming worked satisfies that sponge.
In 1989 I finished school and did a six month contracting stint at a graphics design agency in Northcliff, working for a guy called Alex. I built Alex a quoting system. I remember I kind enjoyed building this system, but also found it quite hard. As I recall the system was built in BASIC.
The idea in 1989 was also to finalise my plans to go the the USA, to go and study computer engineering. Soon I set up to Cupertino in California, and started my trimester. Actually California was a bit of a balls up due to various reasons. Here are some of them:
I thought California was going to be like the surfer life we had in Somerset West, Strand, and Onrus. You could easily hitchhike to the beach with your surfboard, and hang out and smoke weed and surf. No such luck over there in Northern California. It was a complete rat race.
